Dr. Carolyn Eastwood was introduced to the Maxwell Street Foundation (MSF) through the Chicago Jewish Historical Society, where she sat on its board. She was invited to present at the 1993 Maxwell Street Market Colloquium at the University of Illinois at Chicago, organized by founding MSF officer Lori Grove and then Levine Hillel Director, Elliot Zashin. Composed of panels of experts to testify to the significance of the market, Carolyn was passionate about urban markets and travelled the world to visit them with her British husband Tony. She authored several books and articles and among them was the book, Near West Side Stories, that focused on Nate Duncan, Florence Scala, Hilda Dragon Slayers, and Harold Fox, all characters whose lives intersected with
Maxwell Street. Carolyn was a longtime faculty member at DuPage College where she taught in the department of cultural anthropology. As a cultural anthropologist, she advocated for the viability of the Maxwell Street Market and its importance to the city of Chicago, and participated as a board member with the MSF to help sway the city and university to see the Market as a viable resource that was so very worthy of continuity.
