Michael Boruch
1948 – 2024
Board member
Dr. Michael Boruch, former Maxwell Street Foundation (MSF) board member who was a committed member of the MSF Market vending team at the “New” Market on Desplaines St., helped digitize parts of the MSF collection, and more. As a professor at DePaul University in Chicago, he introduced his Chicago Quarter class to our organization by inviting the MSF’s “Chicago’s Maxwell Street” slide lecture there. When he retired from DePaul, he was instrumental in identifying MSF board member, Dr. Janelle Walker, as his replacement in the Chicago Quarter program. Dr. Walker continues the Chicago Quarter class now called “Our City of Neighborhoods” that includes the Maxwell Street neighborhood and is taught to all incoming students at DePaul University. Mike’s legacy and love of Maxwell Street now continues on at DePaul through countless new generations of students. He also taught art classes at Barat College and more recently taught photography at Oakton College, working with young artists there until a week before he died.
